I’ve heard crystals absorb water, will yours? or, Is this crystal hygroscopic?
No, the Hawk IR CLIRVU™ crystal material will not absorb water or degrade. The CLIRVU™ crystal can withstand over 20,000 cleaning cycles – typical cleaning less than once per year! – and repels dust due to its anti-static capability. CLIRVU™ is not hygroscopic.

Will installing the IR Sightglasses or ports void the UL listing or manufacture warranty?
Typical manufacturers warranty will expire 18 months from date of shipment or 12 months from date of commissioning. If your switchgear is greater than 2 years old then there should be no warranty issues.

What will I be able to see through the sightglass, ie. Field of View (FOV)
The achievable Field of View (FOV) is approximately 6 times the cabinet depth. For example, if the cabinet is 6” deep, the diameter as the base of the FOV cone is 36”. For a visual example, click here.

How long does it take to install the product?
The installation process in standard switchgear is less than 10 minutes, the professional installation kit part number IP-100 from Hawk IR can reduce this considerably and is a must for large scale installation.

What is NFPA70e and why do we need to worry about it? We just open the covers to do our thermography
NFPA70E is the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace and is an OSHA Recognised Industry Practice. If you are performing infrared scanning with equipment live and exposed you are running the risk of arc-flash injury or death. This is the case even if you do not remove the covers yourself and do not break the plane of the door during the scan.

Why do you only recommend you P-Range polymer IR windows for control voltage use?
The installation of IR Sightglasses & Windows is a means of reducing both the risk of flashover and corresponding injury. Since polymer materials must be very thin in order to transmit infrared, they cannot withstand the combined temperature and pressure of an arc-fault even.
No thin film polymer IR window optic has ever been arc-flash tested.
The contact burn injury associated with a molten projectile is worse than the original radiant energy making the use of this product type on equipment that has sufficient energy to strike and maintain an arc, extremely dangerous.
